MARTINEZ HAILS CRUISING SWANS

Martinez - delighted.

Roberto Martinez praised the strength in depth of his Swansea squad after a second-string side eased past 10-man Brentford in the Carling Cup first-round.

Martinez opted to name 10 new faces from the opening-day Championship defeat at Charlton, but his shadow side were still too strong for League Two outfit as they eased to a 2-0 victory.

It was Shaun MacDonald who made the difference after netting a goal in either half to seal the win before the late dismissal of Marcus Bean added to the visitors' woes.

Swans manager Martinez said: "The players set their own standards and it's pleasing to see.

"Against a lower league side it could have been a difficult side but we were professional. We created around 14 chances and need to convert them. We have the quality there but we need that sharpness around the box. That will come in time.

"When you have a competitive squad it's important you show what you have. We have great competition in the squad which is good for Swansea.

"It's a headache to pick a side but that's what I want. It's a squad game and they are all vying to play. Whatever happens they will have a big role to play this season."

Martinez hailed winger MacDonald's two-goal salvo, and said: "Shaun showed great quality with his finishing and he can only get better as he's still young and learning. He has all the attributes to be a great player at a high level.

"He needs to continue working hard and he will continue to get the rewards."

It was not long before Swansea made their dominance count through MacDonald's 30th minute strike after meeting Andrea Orlandi's cross.

The Bees were fortunate to escape going further behind moments later when Jordi Gomez's long-range volley bounced back off the crossbar before Owain Tudur Jones and Jason Scotland came close.

Despite their supremacy, Brentford refused to lie down and Marvin Williams headed inches over the crossbar.

But it was the wake-up call Swansea needed as McDonald doubled Swansea's advantage in the 69th minute after Scotland's shot was deflected into the winger's path.

Brentford substitute Moses Ademola crashed a fierce drive against the post before Bean's early exit at the death for two bookable offences.

Brentford boss Andy Scott said: "We were beaten by a strong team but we can take heart out of our display.

"We defended well and never gave up. I thought we created some problems in attack and on another night we could have scored."

He added: "Losing Marcus was the most disappointing aspect of the night. We are decimated as it is but to lose another body is a big blow. We have eight players injured and one suspended so it's not a clever situation with 21 players to choose from."
