BROWN TRIBUTE TO STYLISH SWANS

Brown - no complaints.

Hull manager Phil Brown offered no excuses for his team's Carling Cup demise after they crashed out of the competition against second-round opponents Swansea.

The Tigers, unbeaten following their promotion to the Barclays Premier League, suffered a 2-1 defeat despite veteran striker Dean Windass giving them an early lead.

But Swansea substitute Gorka Pintado levelled the tie and then missed an injury-time penalty before Jordi Gomez's successful spot-kick midway through extra time gave Swansea victory.

And it booked the Welsh club a league cup third-round place for the first time in more than 20 years.

Brown said: "Full credit to Swansea, they played some magnificent football.

"We looked organised in the first half, but it all went out of the window in the second half. We lost our shape and discipline, and (goalkeeper) Matt Duke kept us in it.

"As a collective, the team was far too disorganised and dishevelled in the second half and we lost the game.

"It was a cup tie tonight and the shoe was on the other foot for us, but we didn't wear it well."

Brown believes that Championship newcomers Swansea could make a mark in the higher division under the quality tutelage of manager Roberto Martinez.

Swansea have now gone four games unbeaten in all competitions since an opening weekend defeat against Charlton, and Brown added: "They will certainly acquit themselves well in the Championship.

"It is a set-up here that is built for the next level, and I wish them well ."

Martinez saluted the effort of his players, who grew stronger in thought and deed as the tie wore on.

He said: "I thought the quality was fantastic, especially in the second half. Hull showed why they are a Premier League side in the first half - we probably gave them too much respect and we paid the price by conceding a goal."

As for Pintado's man-of-the-match contribution, Martinez added: "He is in some excellent form and is a handful for anyone.

"He scored a fantastic goal and he could have had a hat-trick. He is a player who always gives 100%."
