NO BLAME FOR BUTTON IN ENGLAND DEFEAT

England Under-19s coach Brian Eastick has refused to let goalkeeper David Button shoulder the blame for his side's sorry defeat to the Czech Republic.

Button's catastrophic blunder nine minutes after the restart cost England dear and once Tomas Necid added another shortly afterwards, there was no way back for the Three Lions.

But Eastick preferred to focus on the way his team failed to create any significant chances against a side reduced to 10 men by the end rather than place responsibility for defeat on Button's shoulders.

"Mistakes happen," he reflected on the young Tottenham man's performance.

"David is an excellent young goalkeeper who has kept an awful lot of clean sheets for us and made a fantastic save in the first half to keep us level in the first place.

"I am not putting the blame at his door. It is a collective failure and we just didn't show enough."

England enjoyed their best spell just before half-time but even with the likes of Scott Sinclair and Daniel Sturridge on the field, they could not open the Czech defence up.

And, as Eastick admitted, the performance once Jakub Heidenreich and Roman Brunclick had been dismissed was poor.

"Although we were 2-0 down, when the first guy was sent off I felt we had a chance," he said.

"But we just did not create enough and did not make them work at all.

"Our performance at that stage was woeful and we must do better."

England now face Italy on Thursday knowing victory could be essential to their chances of progression for the knock-out stage.
