Greater Manchester Police are planning a massive crowd control operation for the game between Manchester United and Wigan that will decide the league title.
It is expected that between 15,000 and 20,000 United fans will make the trip to the JJB Stadium, despite the official allocation of 4,928 tickets being sold out long ago.
Therefore, it is expected that thousands will turn up in the hope of getting tickets on the black market. Wigan supporters are thought to have sold some tickets in the home sections for more than the cost of a season ticket at the JJB (£250).
Wigan chairman Dave Whelan fears serious problems for the game, that United have to win to ensure they win the Premier League.
He said: "I think we are going to have 10,000 or 15,000 United fans outside this ground on Sunday. It's up to £450 on eBay for a ticket. Manchester United have got fans all over the world and I think we'll be swamped in Wigan. I just feel that we could end up with as many as 20,000 locked outside."
The Guardian reports that GMP will double the usual number of officers on duty for the game in an effort to control the crowds, meaning around 120 officers will be on duty inside the ground. The policing costs of £34,000 will be shared between the club and the Premier League.
GMP Chief Superintendent Lee Bruckshaw rather hopefully urged United fans not to travel to Wigan, but reassured the public that they would be prepared should the hoardes roll in.
He said: "We are aware of the demand for tickets and are expecting a larger crowd than usual.
"We have prepared thoroughly and will have enough officers on hand to police the anticipated number of visitors. We would advise fans not to travel to Wigan without a ticket but extra provisions have been put in place to police crowds in the town and around the ground.
"While we do not discuss staffing levels, I am satisfied we have sufficient cover to police all eventualities and to ensure the game and any post-match celebrations pass off without any trouble."
