CLARETS BOSS GIVES PAT ON THE BACK

Coyle - praise for new boy Paterson.

Burnley boss Owen Coyle hailed summer signing Martin Paterson after his double saw off Bury 2-0 and put the Clarets into the Carling Cup second round.

Paterson claimed a 40th-minute opener and pounced again in the final minute to make it three in two since his million-pound move from Scunthorpe.

"We're delighted with him, but not just because of his goals," said Coyle.

"The main reason we signed him is because of his work ethic - you can never fault it - and hopefully that'll rub off on the other players.

"It was never going to be an easy game. They were boosted by a win at the weekend and we had a bad result. It was important that we bounced back and we did that by putting ourselves into the next round.

"I thought we were in control of the game in the first half even though Brian Jensen made a good save. We had numerous opportunities and I felt it was only a matter of time before we scored, and we got a very well-worked goal.

"We could have passed the ball better in the second half, but full credit to Bury, Brian had to pull off a great double save, which were big saves during that period.

"But we stuck to it, got the second goal, and hopefully we can build on that at Ipswich on Saturday."

Burnley goalkeeper Jensen had denied Stephen Dawson and Elliott Bennett early on, before a Wade Elliott cross glanced the Bury crossbar.

The impressive Chris Eagles fired wide in the 23rd minute after exchanging passes with Paterson and the Clarets grabbed a deserved lead when the unmarked Paterson turned in Christian Kalvenes' left-wing cross at the far post.

Jensen produced a fine double save to deny Glynn Hurst and Bennett on the hour mark, but Paterson sealed it by converting the rebound after Wayne Brown denied Eagles.

Bury boss Alan Knill was disappointed despite a spirited second-half performance from the League Two side.

"We should have won," he said. "It's difficult to take because I think we've got a decent team here and I want to win every game, I don't care who we play.

"I know there were lots of positives but the bottom line is we lost.

"They took the chances they had and we didn't, and they're in the next round, not us."
