Paterson - second-half brace.

Burnley reached the Carling Cup third round at the expense of Lancashire rivals Oldham for the second successive season courtesy of Martin Paterson's second-half brace and a Chris McCann header.

McCann opened the scoring early on before Paterson extended his recent purple patch in front of goal after taking full advantage of some sluggish defending by the John Sheridan's League One leaders.

Paterson notched his first goal at Turf Moor following his £1million summer move from Scunthorpe after 63 minutes and then sealed a comfortable win for the Clarets 10 minutes from time.

It took Paterson's tally for the season to five goals, four of which have come in this competition following his brace against Bury in round one.

Clarets boss Owen Coyle will now be hoping the confidence gained from a professional performance against the Latics can help his side banish a poor start to the season which sees the Lancashire club currently second bottom in the Championship.

Coyle's decision to name a full-strength Burnley starting line-up - including the likes of Northern Ireland international Paterson and Chris Eagles - almost paid dividends inside three minutes.

Kevin McDonald's weighted pass out on the right flank allowed Paterson to twist and turn past Reuben Hazell, but the acute angle proved too much and the former Stoke striker rippled the side-netting from six yards.

The hosts were not to be denied a goal their brisk start deserved, however, as McCann broke the deadlock with 13 minutes played.

Eagles, from inside his own half, steered a lofted ball down the right wing and Wade Elliott scampered towards the goalline.

There was still plenty of work for the Burnley playmaker to do, but Elliott had the time and space to chip the ball back to the penalty spot where the waiting McCann stooped to divert a downward header past Greg Fleming.

Chris O'Grady saw his 20-yard drive crash just wide of Brian Jensen's goal at the other end shortly afterwards as the visitors searched for an immediate reply.

Eight minutes before the interval, Paterson and Elliott played a neat one-two just outside the penalty area, but the latter dragged wide.

Danny Whitaker then volleyed over acrobatically on the stroke of half-time on a rare Oldham attack.

Eagles had a half-hearted shout for a penalty turned away following a clash with Stefan Stam on the hour after a sluggish start to the second half from both sides.

And the former Manchester United midfielder was instrumental in Burnley's second goal moments later.

Eagles raced in from the right-wing byline and eased past a clutch of Oldham defenders before firing a rasping shot which Fleming could only divert into the path of Paterson, who pounced to prod home with ease.

Sheridan immediately brought on Lee Hughes - who netted a hat-trick against Cheltenham at the weekend - and the introduction of the 32-year-old former West Brom striker kick-started his Oldham side.

Whitaker first had a 20-yard free-kick saved by Jensen before the Burnley stopper produced a fine point-blank save to deny Lewis Alessandra.

Jensen bizarrely turned provider 10 minutes from time as his punted kick caused chaos in the Oldham defence and substitute Joey Gudjonsson squared for Paterson to dispatch a low drive which gave Fleming no chance.

Paterson almost grabbed his hat-trick following another defensive mix-up but this time was denied by the post and the Clarets eased into the draw for the third round.
