Arsenal Come Off Worst In Wafer Draw...

You have to love branding. Because European football's governing body a) insist on having their acronym repeated endlessly whenever their senior club competition is mentioned and b) chose to honour the hosts of next year's final by choosing an Italian presenter, I am duty bound to refer to Thursday's proceedings in Monaco as the Wafer Champions League draw.

Quite why Eurosport chose a host who wet himself at the prospect of Fiorentina going in Group H was hard to fathom - as this was an impossibility, with Juventus already in there. Nor is it clear why they scheduled it for 5pm, up against actual football.

While Manchester City were challenging Liverpool in the lucky-buggers stakes to get a draw in the UEFA Cup, Manchester United were getting a fortunate draw in Wafer's big one. Trips to Villarreal, Celtic and Aalborg make for some level of domestic bliss, as all the trips home from away matches will be gentle enough.

Liverpool, too, have a geographically friendly draw. In the past two seasons they have accounted for PSV and Marseille, though only in the latter case after Marseille nearly accounted for them with a 1-0 win at Anfield last year. Fernando Torres will return to the Vicente Calderon for the first time, which suggests a) that Atletico Madrid used the proceeds of his sale well to reach a competition beyond them during El Nino's years and b) that Spain has a proper league, with, you know, competition and everything.

Chelsea play Roma, who must be sick of the sight of Premier League clubs, and Laurent Blanc's Bordeaux, who made a serious challenge to Lyon last season.

The fourth team in that group are CFR Cluj, the Romanian champions. Oddly, whenevr I told people in the pub last night that consequently Peter Kenyon would be going on a trip to Transylvania, they started laughing.

If you get past the doubts over Liverpool's ability to beat anyone at present, Arsenal are the big Premier League sufferers in this - because of their Premier League obligations. The Gunners should be strong enough to see off Fenerbahce and Dymano Kyiv, but will the lengthy trips affect their domestic form?
