August 6, 1925: Eddie Bailey was born. Now we know that you haven't heard of Eddie Bailey but stay with us because there's a story here. He signed amateur forms with Tottenham during the war but he was then reported as missing in action and Spurs let his registration lapse. The next they saw of him was when he wandered into White Hart Lane to pick up his boots - he'd arrived back in England and Chelsea had persuaded him to sign for them, the dastardly cads. An argument ensued and Chelsea agreed to rip up the deal, with Bailey returning to Spurs and eventually signing professional forms. You see, the more things change, the more they remain the same...
August 6, 1974: Brian Clough signed Duncan McKenzie for £240,000 from Nottingham Forest and he would become the only successful signing from Clough's 44-day reign at Leeds. It says here that he could jump over a parked car and throw a golf ball the length of a football field. How he discovered either of those talents is a mystery.
August 6, 1991: Aston Villa paid £450,000 to end Kevin Richardson's less-than-successful spell with Real Sociedad and that proved to be money very well spent as he captained them to a second-place finish in the Premier League and a League Cup victory. You see , Big Ron's judgement wasn't always so poor.
August 6, 1992: ManYoo paid £1m for Dion Dublin after Sir Alex Ferguson had been impressed with his performance in a cup tie for Cambridge United. A broken leg and the form of Eric Cantona conspired to keep his United appearances down to 12 league games and two years later he moved on to Coventry City in a £2m deal (after causing Howard Kendall to resign from Everton after his board blocked a move).
August 6, 1996: Alan Shearer was officially unveiled as a Newcastle player - to thousands upon thousands of screaming, unemployed Geordies.
And Today In Real History...
1762: The Earl of Sandwich demands a quick snack to eat at the card table. Someone comes up with the wacky idea of sticking some meat between two slices of bread. Hey presto...
1945: Enola Gay (you should have stayed at home yesterday) drops the first bomb on Hiroshima, killing 70,000 people.
1962: Jamaica celebrates independence. Presumably in traditional manner.
At Number One when Cloughie bought McKenzie was George McCrae's 'Rock Your Baby'.
